Chrysanthemum Ball at Nikitsky Botanical Garden
It is difficult to find a garden in which there would be no place for chrysanthemums. These amazing flowers conquered the whole world with their beauty. Long flowering, a wealth of colors, a variety of forms - they are rightfully considered one of the most amazing plants on earth. And, despite the fact that today chrysanthemums are on sale with different flowering periods, for most of us, they are still associated with autumn, because it is during this period that you can appreciate all their splendor.
How many total varieties of chrysanthemum today can no longer be calculated. However, the best of them are collected and presented to lovers of beauty in the botanical gardens.
One of such amazing exhibitions is the annual autumn ball of chrysanthemums of the Crimean Nikitsky Botanical Garden. Held since 1953, it has earned special attention and has become an event gathering people from all over the world. Several tens of thousands of plants, about 200 varieties - there is something to marvel at the exhibition in the botanical garden. But let's take a look at the collection in an orderly fashion.
Founded in 1811 by decree of Emperor Alexander I, the Nikitsky Botanical Garden is located on the southern coast of Crimea between the village of Nikita and the Black Sea. The exhibition "Ball of Chrysanthemums" is held annually from the second half of October to mid-November.
Variety of Chrysanthemum Varieties
Due to the fact that chrysanthemums are quite easy to select, on the earth there are several tens of thousands of varieties. Moreover, until today, a unified classification system for this amazing culture has not been identified, and what is offered in world practice is quite complicated and confusing. For this reason, most often chrysanthemums are simply divided into two large groups - large-flowered and small-flowered. And if the representatives of the first group are whimsical and in most cases require greenhouse conditions, then the second, just the same, are the very bewitching autumn flowers that settled in our gardens forever.
Small-flowered chrysanthemums, or Korean, have inflorescences of various shapes and colors, but all of them in diameter do not exceed 9 cm. They are distinguished by simple care. Not demanding on growing conditions. They are characterized by relatively high resistance to low temperatures. Easy to combine with autumn perennials. Good cut. Transportable enough. Have a long flowering period. Due to the similarity of leaflets with oak, they are popularly referred to as “oak trees” or “oak trees”.
They can be stunted, with a height of only 30 cm, medium-tall - up to half a meter high and tall - up to 1 m or more. To have double, semi-double, not double (single, double, three or four-row), pompom, anemone flowers. Differ in terms of flowering - some varieties begin to bloom in July, others continue until the very frosts.
One of the most interesting stunted chrysanthemums, remembered already by name, is a selection variety of the Crimean Nikitsky Botanical Garden "Teddy bear". He got his name not by accident: being only about 40 cm tall, the compact bush of this plant is simply strewn with orange-yellow terry inflorescences and, planted in a group, it really seems plush. When fully blossomed, the Teddy bear changes its color to orange-apricot and pleases with flowering from July to mid-autumn.
The same luxuriously terry, abundantly blooming, but already the color of the rays of the summer sun is an introductory variety Axima yellow. And here are the bushes of a semi-double border chrysanthemum Fantasy They attract attention not only with incredibly lush floral decoration, but with a combination of soft pink petals with a clearly defined yellow center. Of the varieties with white flowers, one can note a rather early, semi-double Paradiso white.
All of them are recommended for landscaping gardens and are great for autumn borders.
Mid-sized chrysanthemums look very solemnly. They can already be used for cutting, but nevertheless, more often this group solo in mixborders or decorate rabatki.
From the collection of the botanical garden, I would like to single out, first of all, the novelties developed by breeder Zoya Andryushenkova.
A stranger. This variety is especially attractive due to the combination of berry-pink and cream-white shades in colors. Thanks to them, simple, but rather large (about 6 cm in diameter), half-open inflorescences seem to glow from the inside. The bush is collected, with a height of not more than 40 cm. Peduncles are strong. This allows the plant to be used not only in flower beds, but also as a pot culture. It is simply impossible to confuse Stranger with something else!
Olenka. No less memorable variety. Its large, about 5 cm in diameter, inflorescences at the beginning of flowering immediately contain three elegant shades: light green (central tubular flowers), orange and yellow (marginal reeds). Moreover, the latter, when fully opened, are deliberately bent downward, which gives the flowering plant a somewhat “curly” look.
Miner. Quite original and because of the abundant flowering, and because of the rather rare brick color of inflorescences. Its simple three-row flowers seem to glow in the sun. Simple bushes next to darker varieties of small-flowered chrysanthemums look especially elegant.
In the same group can be attributed a very delicate white and pink variety Annushkabright red Artemon and radiant yellow Sunny day.
The novelties of introduction are also remembered for their catchiness: Mount carmen, Mount lanin, Mount kenya, Mount verde, Foxy time.
And, of course, it is impossible to pass by tall chrysanthemums. They bloom a little later than the representatives of the first two groups, but the variety is extraordinary!
In memory of Babkina. It has simple, but very bright inflorescences with a diameter of about 7 cm. Their reed flowers are saturated pink with catchy white bordering, somewhat curved. The plant can be from 75 to 135 cm high. It has a very lush flowering. Great for cutting.
Emily. It is notable for simple delicate inflorescences, up to 9 cm in diameter, the regional reed flowers of which carry two shades: pink at the base, white at the tips. Compact, well leafy, tall (about 100 cm high) bush looks good in flower beds.
Dolly. The main color of the regional reed flowers is red-raspberry, the tips are yellow. Central tubular flowers are bright yellow. The inflorescences are simple, with a diameter of about 5 cm. The plant is densely lobed, up to 85 cm high. The leaves are dark green.
Belianka. Terry inflorescence, slightly drooping, pale pinkish or white, with a diameter of about 6 cm. Plant height from 55 to 80 cm.
Autumn Waltz. Terry inflorescence, with a diameter of 4 - 5 cm, carries shades of pink, white and yellow. The bush is dense, densely leafy, about 60 cm high. The leaves are dark green.
Alice. The bush is about 60 cm high, dense, well leafy. The leaves are dark green. The inflorescence is simple. Tubular marginal flowers are bicolor, combining pink and white. The diameter of the inflorescences is 7 - 9 cm.
Golden Moscow. The inflorescence is not large, anemone, with a diameter of 3-5 cm, yellow. A plant about 75 cm high, densely leafy. The bush is closed. Leaves are green.
